  Time Series Measurements

What are CICORE coastal time series?

CICORE uses in-situ sensors to make continuous, high frequency measurements of water quality from the coastal ocean and associated meteorological observations. Sensors are distributed along the coast from northern to southern California and the sensor network extends into San Francisco Bay . The network is expanded as funding allows and CICORE is working with other regional observing efforts to include their instrumentation in the CICORE data stream. Weather stations are paired with the in-situ sensors to provide continuous, high-frequency meteorological data streams necessary in interpreting water quality data.

Data Collection

The sensors have been located in areas where there is a high probability of significant impact from either natural or anthropogenic contaminants entering the coastal environment. Sensors have been deployed, where possible, to have real time communication of data to the laboratory and posting on the internet. Where this either isn't possible, or has not yet been implemented, the data are regularly downloaded from the instruments and posted on the internet as quickly as possible. CICORE is working with private industry partners to improve the connectivity between instruments and the public, particularly through the development of robust cellular communications for data transmission

Data Distribution

Data are available in a number of different formats. CICORE is working to simplify and standardize the formats. Typically real time data, which are only lightly quality controlled, and fully quality controlled archived data are available. The real time files are generally ascii files maintained on the web site reporting the particular data suite. The archived files exist in both simple ascii format text files and in searchable data bases.

On-Line CICORE Data

All sites distribute the following in situ water quality data: water temperature, conductivity, salinity, and pressure (depth). Additional parameters include local currents, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, and chlorophyll fluorescence, and hydrocarbon fluorescence. Monitoring sites with weather stations distribute wind speed and direction, relative humidity, air temperature, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), precipitation and barometric pressure data.
