Hyperspectral Imager

The Florida Environmental Research Institute (FERI), in collaboration with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), has developed and calibrated the Portable Hyperspectral Imager for Low-Light Spectroscopy (PHILLS) and deployed the instrument on multiple high-altitude and low-altitude aircraft since 1998. This system was specifically designed for the marine environment, and its calibration and deployment schemes are focused on retrieving the highest quality water-leaving spectral radiance.

In 2004, FERI started development on a new hyperspectral sensor. The Spectroscopic Aerial Mapping System with On-board Navigation (SAMSON) is an upgraded design that will not only deliver data of improved quality but also allow for more stable operations in the coastal environment. SAMSON is built around the latest technology and yields significant increases in spectral and spatial resolution.
